8cm Disc
A compact disc measuring only 8cm in diameter. With an approximate storage capacity of 192 MB,
equalising roughly 21 min. 50 sec. of playtime, it is ideal for promotional purposes.
AB-CD
A 12 cm disc with only the inner 8cm covered with a reflective aluminium layer. The outer part of
the disc remains clear, while the full surface of the disc can be printed.
Artwork & Packaging
All parts made of paper, carton, plastic etc. which complete the final appearance of a product.
Catalogue number
A unique identity code you choose for your product. All components of the product must be labelled
with this code to ensure proper handling of your order.
CD
Compact Disc: a 120mm (approx. 5") disc used to store optical, machine-readable, digital data that

CD ROM
Compact Disc - Read Only Memory. Main features consist of the possibility of storing large

CD Text
The CD TEXT feature enables CD-Players to display text information such as artist, title, track

Information or add precise character Information.
CMYK
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black (Key Color) are the process colours for 4 colour print (picture or
offset print).
Colour Disc/DVD
Sony DADC's Colour Discs are available in eight different colours. As colours are strongly
associated with emotions the very special appearance should emphasise the theme of the disc and
therefore help boost sales.
Copyright Statement
Confirmation to the manufacturer that the publisher (customer) of an intellectual property holds
distribution rights from the owner of the IP (intellectual property).
Digital Rights Management (DRM)
DRM is any set of technologies which encrypts digital content, enabling content owners to control
access to their data. It enables secure distribution, promotion, and sale of digital media content
not only via the Internet, but also for press-previews or beta test software on CD-R.
Disc menu
The main menu of a DVD-Video disc, from which titles are selected. Also called the system menu or
title selection menu. Sometimes confusingly called the title menu, which more accurately refers to
the menu within a title from which audio, sub-picture, chapters, and so forth can be selected.
DVD
An acronym for Digital Versatile Disc, a new optical-disc technology developed by the DVD
Consortium, a collection of 10 companies who contributed to the DVD standard and specification.
There are five specified DVD disc varieties. DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R (record-able),
DVD-RAM (erasable).
DVD-10
Double-sided, single-layer DVD capable of holding 9.4 GB of data.
DVD-5
A single-sided single-layer DVD capable of holding 4.7 GB of data.
DVD-9
Single-sided, dual-layer DVD holding 8.5 GB of data. This unique format allows both moulded DVD
data halves to be read from the same side of the disc by using a clear bonding agent, a
semi-reflective metal layer on the first data disc and by adjusting the focus point of the player
to read two layers.
DVD Authoring
The process of taking data assets such as video, audio, text, data and combining them into a
DVD-Video or DVD-ROM compliant disc image. The inputs to this process might consist of compressed
video files in MPEG2, compressed audio files in AC-3 and subtitles as bitmap images; the output or
end result of the authoring process would typically be a DLT tape with a DVD disc-image file and
DDP descriptors.
DVD-R
Recordable media to store data or create an individual Video DVD with a DVD-R Videorecorder or a
DVD-R recorder and computer.
DVD-ROM
A pre-recorded DVD disc conforming to the DVD File system and specification but not to the
DVD-Video or DVD-Audio specified application layer.
DVD-Video (DVD-V)
A pre-recorded DVD disc conforming to Book B or the Video Application specification in the DVD
Video specification.
Dye
As a colour layer, the dye allows the recording of information onto a CD-R. During the process of
recording the laser alters the organic features of the dye and creates the information structure.
The resulting playback quality is similar to one of a pre-recorded CD or CD-ROM.

eCommerce is the electronic form of commerce via the internet. Sony DADC offers to set up eCommerce
solutions for clients tailored to their specific needs. Either for selling products like CDs or
DVDs and merchandising via the net or for buying and distributing digital audio and video content
via a shop engine.

Logo
Each disc has to carry a logo according to the applicable standard (Red/Blue/Yellow Book).
Mastering
Transferring data from the customer's input media onto glass master disc prior to disc replication.
Offset Print
Print technology where the viscose printing colour is carried from a flat printing block (such as a
cylinder stringed with a durex) on the disc. Print resolutions of up to 200 lpi are possible.

Pantone Colours
Pantone, a company trademark utilizing a system to mix ink colour to create a library of new
colours. Pantone colours at Sony DADC are normally used for screenprinting.
Picture Print
Screenprint at a resolution of 133 lpi, used e.g. for photos.
Screenprinting
A printmaking technology in which stencils are applied to a screen in a way that when ink is
applied it is prevented from passing through the parts of the screen while penetrating the rest of
the screen, thereby printing an image on the disc placed underneath. The screen is stretched across
a frame and attached to a base in such a manner that it can readily move up and down, so that the
disc can be easily placed and removed as required Ink is forced with a squeegee through the
unblocked portions of the screen onto the surface beneath.

Serialization
Sony DADC offer the possibility of applying an individual series or code number for every disc of a
CD or DVD production, e.g. for identification purposes. The series or code number is printed
approximately 5mm from the center hole in arc form.
SniffleDisc
Using the latest technology, Sony DADC's Sniffle discs have scents captured within the printed
labels. The emotions and memories the customer associates with these smells make the discs stand
out from the crowd and helps in selling them.
SniffleDVD
Like the SniffleDisc, the SniffleDVD has a scent captured within the printed label. As unique
marketing tools the scents are associated with the products and should keep them fresh in mind.
